- overpowering, overwhelming emotional response towards losing a loved one to sickness, accident or any such cause.
- starts as an emotional reaction
- with time has an effect on the physical, cognitive, social, cultural and philosophical aspects also
- manifests as difficult and unacceptable thoughts and emotions characterised by a sense of denial seen in behaviours like Shock, Anger, Disbelief, Deep Sadness, Guilt.
- It is an important stage in acknowleding one's loss and be able to accept it as the truth and be able to live with it henceforth in a healthy manner.
- Lack of acceptance of the loss leads to severe complications hindering day to day normalcy and mental & emotional well being.
